Housing Assistance Sought for Typhoon Pepeng Victims

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. appealed to the National Housing Authority (NHA) to extend housing assistance to the 301 families in the city whose houses were either totally or partially damaged by typhoon “Pepeng.”

“We beseech for your compassion for you to extend housing assistance to these affected families.  As you very well know, Baguio City shall be experiencing the plummeting of temperature on the ensuing days and we will likewise be celebrating the holiday season, hence the urgency of our request,” the mayor wrote NHS General Manager Federico Laxa.

He said providing a suitable relocation site or housing construction assistance for these victims will “allow them to start anew and shall make their hardship more bearable most especially during this Yuletide Season.”

The list of the victims was collated by the city social welfare and development office under social welfare and development officer Betty Fangasan.

The mayor said the city has also rendered assistance on its own to the victims.

Based on the OCSWADO report, 28 families whose houses were totally destroyed were provided assistance of P70,000 per family under the Core Shelter Assistance Program while 301 families with partially damaged houses were awarded cash assistance ranging from P10,000 to P20,000 per family.

Relatives of the 65persons who died during the disaster were also given cash assistance worth P20,000 while the 38 injured were awarded P10,000 each.  

Other assistance given were Food for Work and Cash for Work for damaged facilities which benefited 1,500 individuals at P195 each for ten days; supplemental feeding which benefitted 150 children, Financial Assistance  for Balik Probinsya Program for ten families, AICs for 1500 families, Capability Builidng on Disaster Management with 300 participants and livelihood assistance which benefited 1,500 individuals.  – aileen p. refuerzo
